Friendly URLs

You can assign friendly URLs to both the guide and the tabs within a guide (including the Home or initial page). You must assign a friendly URL to all student-facing guides and pages. They are easier to use in the course builds and help the QA team ensure the right links are added to the correct course in Blackboard.

When assigning a friendly URL to a library resources/readings page (LRR):

  • Format the overall page URL with the course number in CAPS, followed by a lowercase v and an uppercase version letter.
    • Example: https://library.phoenix.edu/DNP701vZ
  • Add friendly URLs to each week using w[week number].
    • Example: https://library.phoenix.edu/DNP701vZ/w1

When assigning a friendly URL to a non-course guide:

  • Use all lowercase.
  • Use underscores, instead of hyphens, in between words (example: understanding_citations).
  • Don't use abbreviations that will be confused with other guides.
  • Add friendly URLs to the tabs if the guide has more than one tab.

Asset Metadata

Links, Books, and Documents

When adding most assets to a guide, we typically add three pieces of data:

  • Database code in the Description box*
  • Course(s) or guide(s) the asset is attached to in the Description box*
  • College (or University Library if used for the library website) the asset is linked to on the Subject Associations tab

The Description Display should then be set to Hide description as we don't need or want this information visible to students.

*Unless the description box is needed to describe the object. In that case, do not include this information and set the Description Display to either Display beneath the item title or Hover over the "info" icon.

Widgets (Videos)

When adding a widget, typically a video, we do not have the same ability to add metadata to the object. In this case, add the following:

  • Database code at the beginning of the object's Name.
  • Type of object contained in the widget at the end of the Name in brackets.
  • College (or University Library if used for the library website ) the asset is attached to on the Subject Associations tab.

Subjects & Tags

Subjects

Subjects are controlled at the site level by the site administrator. If you are uncertain about which subject to select or would like to discuss adding a new subject to the site, please contact Alexis.

Please note that some subjects (like the names of the colleges) are used for tracking purposes and should not be added to pages or databases.

Tags

We use tags in two ways:

  1. To make it easier for students to find guides through the library search. Guides located in the MyPhoenix group are all searchable through the library search.
  2. To track a course's version(s) using an LRR page. When building an LRR, you will want to add the version of the course to the tags (for example, R1, V1).

Here are a few tips on using tags on non-course guides:

Do

  • Use terminology you believe students, faculty, and staff would use when searching for this content.
  • Use common misspellings for the tags you are entering. For example, people often misspell library as libary or libray.
  • Include all of your tabs/pages in the guide's tags. Tags are assigned at the guide level, not the tab/page level, so all the pages in your guide will be searchable by the tags you assign to the guide.

Don't

  • Tag the guide with the subjects assigned to it. This is redundant metadata.
  • Use the guide title as a tag. The title is already searchable.
