General Citation Rules

We don't follow APA to the letter on purpose. We do our best to get close, but citations aren't always perfect because we want to give the students the most relevant information possible. We also have some system limitations that force us to do less-than-perfect citations.

Here are some general rules when adding content to a readings page.

  • Don't include the URL of the item in the citation. We often run out of room to have this information.
  • Look at the citation from the student's perspective. Does it give them helpful information to tell them what they'll be doing?
  • Make sure you add the reusable Citation Standards box as a floating box to the bottom of your page.
  • Please use and to italicize sections of the text in your citation. Example:
    • Author Last Name, First and Middle Initials. (2010). Article name. Title of Journal, Volume(Issue), Page-Page. DOI if available.

For more information on APA formatting, please see the APA Style site.
