Elevate Your Research

Library hacks

If you're having trouble finding what you need, here are some tips to help you tweak your research strategies.

  • Switch up your terminology. Synonyms can help you both narrow and broaden your search results.
    • Check the subject terms. Start broadly with your terms, such as criminal justice and policing, then use subject limiters to narrow your results, like police administration or police reform.
    • Explore related articles. Look near abstracts for clickable subject terms to find similar content.
  • Use a topic finder. Databases like Credo Reference, Global Issues in Context, and Opposing Viewpoints can help you discover information on and refine your topic.
  • Think outside your field. If your topic overlaps with another field, expand your search to other subject databases. For example, if you're researching school resource officers, education databases might have helpful materials.
  • Consider geographic or jurisdictional differences. Laws and practices can vary, which can affect the scope of available research.
  • Be aware of the currency of your topic. Some topics might yield limited or outdated sources. For example, government statistics may be lagging by years depending on the agency collecting them.
