Valentine's Day was a few days ago, but you probably haven't finished your box of chocolates yet, and we haven't finished sharing all the romance stories you can find in the library! A couple of years ago, I wrote about classic romance novels you can find in the library, but did you know we also have movies in the library? We do! Our film databases have more than just documentaries and talks for your classes - they also have movies you can watch for fun, including romances! So open up that laptop, grab that box of chocolates, and enjoy one of these romantic films!

Movies

    Pride and Prejudice, Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
    There have been many film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, but this 1995 BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is the quintessential classic!

  • Jane Eyre, Parts 1 and 2 
    If you like your historical romances slightly darker and more dramatic, watch the BBC's 2006 film adaptation of Jane Eyre, starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens.
     
  • I Carry You With Me (2020)
    This romantic drama spans decades and countries, featuring a teacher and an aspiring chef who reach for their dreams together.
     
  • Head in the Clouds (2004)
    This period drama featuring Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz, and Stuart Townsend has some darker themes, but is a dramatic account of how the Spanish Civil War and World War II impacted their lives and relationships.
     
  • Love is Strange (2014)
    John Lithgow and Alfred Molina star as a couple who finally marry after decades together, only to be temporarily separated due to a job loss and lack of affordable housing. It's a portrayal of how time and family can strengthen bonds.
     
  • Maggie's Plan (2015)
    This ensemble cast of New Yorkers on different life paths that converge and diverge includes Ethan Hawke, Greta Gerwig, Julianne Moore, Maya Rudolph, and Bill Hader.
     
  • Youth Without Youth (2007)
    This historical drama fantasy directed by Francis Ford Coppola takes place at the onset of World War II. It's about human evolution, but it's also the story of a love that spans lifetimes through reincarnation and higher powers.
     

Documentaries

  • Love Hurts: The Science of Heartbreak 
    Sometimes, things just don't work out, and you feel absolutely miserable. It might be a small comfort to know that that's science! This documentary explains the biological reasons why you might feel like you're wallowing in despair when a relationship ends.
     
  • The Great American Read: What We Do for Love 
    This PBS documentary explores why exactly we love to read about all different kinds of love.
