For many, the 1960s mark the true end of modern America. Whereas the modernists remained serious about the transcendent nature of art, they wanted an art that was relevant, and that not only spoke about justice but also helped create it.
The American poet Emily Dickinson decided against publishing her poems, and during her lifetime only seven of her works were ever published. During the Civil War, she wrote over 800 poems. At her death, she left behind over 2,000 poems.
